What you'll do

Overview

Do you like the idea of walking the Camino but are put off by its length, or having to carry all your kit? On your  ‘A taste of the Camino’ holiday,  you’ll be met at the airport and driven to your accommodation, where you´ll start your walking holiday. You will be dropped you off each day at a new start point and picked up at the end of the day. You will be whisked back to your accommodation, where you can relax, swim, maybe enjoy a cocktail by the pool. In the evening you will be served a hearty, home cooked, three course meal with wine. During which, you can reflect with your fellow walkers on the experiences of the day. There will be  experienced walkers on hand with tips on how to make the most of your walks during the week ahead.

Each morning after a delicious breakfast you will be taken to a new drop off point for that day’s walk. You’ll be walking between about 20 & 25 km each day, covering about 95 km during the entire week. You’ll walk through pretty villages and productive vineyards, winding your way through the stunning French countryside with beautiful views of the Pyrenees mountains in the distance. The experience includes four days walking and one free day for relaxing by the pool or exploring a local village. Let us be your Chauffeurs, Chefs, Sommelier and Hosts for a week whilst you concentrate on getting the most from your holiday!

Arrival Day

If you choose to take advantage of the complimentary transfer you will be collected from Lourdes airport and driven to Espas and your home for the next seven days.

Take time to settle in and relax, perhaps take a dip in the pool before a welcome cocktail and dinner is served.

You will get to know your fellow walkers and be given details about the route and timings for each day.

Walking the Camino de Santiago route

A typical walking day will look like this
Breakfast at around 8 o’clock either outside in the summer kitchen, or at the large dining table inside the gite.

After breakfast  you will leave for that day’s start point, which will be between 40-50 mins journey by car each day. You’ll walk on a suggested route, but you will be free to stop off at any point.

Each day’s walk will be for between 4 ½ to 6 hours – between 20 and 25 kms.

You can stop for lunch during the hike, and you will be collected at a predetermined place later each afternoon.

You will be whisked back to Walnut Lodge, ( again around a 40-50 mins journey by car) where you can relax, swim, snooze, maybe enjoy a cocktail. You will have your evening meal with your hosts and fellow walkers, typically this will include an appetiser, a main dish with sides and a dessert. ( please let us know if you have any food intolerances )

Wine is included with the meal. After dinner we’ll chat about the following day’s walk and the highlights and landmarks to look out for.

You will be staying in one of the two guest bedrooms in the main house , or one of the two guest bedrooms in the gite – each two rooms share a shower room and separate toilet.

There are washing machines on site so you can wash and dry any laundry you need for subsequent days. The pool is available for your entire stay, and will be very welcome after a day of hiking.

The property benefits from a very large 3 acre garden, so there is plenty of room if you would like to relax with a book under a tree. There is a  a covered outside summer kitchen to eat in, a covered outside terrace, a dining area near to pool and a large dining area in the gite.

Free day

On your free day your hosts will be happy to give you ideas and information about the places you can visit near to the Lodge. Alternatively you can spend the day relaxing by the pool or in the gardens.

There will be one free evening during the week when your hosts will drive you to a local town where there are several good restaurants to choose from and of course they will collect you after dinner and take you back to your accommodation.

Your local host

Andrew and Dan

Andrew and Dan decided to start a new life in the South of France to enjoy the peaceful countryside of the Occitanie region, and start a business hosting guests in their country house and gite. They moved to France from the UK at the end of 2020, during the pandemic, and opened their holiday gite in 2021. Due to its unique position close to the route of the Camino de Santiago they decided to offer hiking breaks and also painting, photography and cooking breaks. They are wonderful hosts and receive rave reviews for their accommodation and their hospitality. They have appeared on C4´s “A new life in the sun“ and it’s sister program “Where are they now?“
