What you'll do

Overview

Running from 14 June to 17 June 2024.
Residential 4-day workshop for singer-songwriters, staying in a beautiful house in France, with the legendary artist, producer and composer, Mike Batt

Mike Batt is one of Europe’s best-known and respected artists, his writing and production work encompassing TV, classical and pop music, movie scores, musicals, orchestral composition and conducting.

His catalogue of hits include the multi-million-selling ‘Bright Eyes’ – written for Art Garfunkel – ‘Caravan’ for Barbara Dickson, and ‘Nine Million Bicycles’ for Katie Melua, whom he discovered and managed for 10 years, selling 11 million Melua records on his own label.

As an accomplished arranger and conductor, he has achieved six internationally successful solo albums, has conducted many of the world’s greatest orchestras in a variety of classical and pop repertoire and has composed anthems at the request of the UK’s Royal Family. But he still finds time to work on an eclectic range of projects from films to heavy rock with bands like Hawkwind.

And, of course, to British fans he is terribly famous for creating the musical accompaniment for the children’s BBC TV series The Wombles, which led to his forming a Wombles pop group which had dozens of chart hits and four gold albums. Mike wrote, produced, arranged and sang as a member of the group and in 1974, the Wombles became the biggest-selling UK singles band.

This all-inclusive 4-day break contains 3 days of group instruction workshops, communal sessions, one-to-one tuition and advice from Mike, writing, performances and the bonus of an al fresco Batt gig in the house grounds.

Since 1994, I have owned a beautiful house surrounded by idyllic countryside in an un-spoilt and deeply historical area of France where food, wine, literature and beautiful music remain de rigueur –  and I wanted to share  this wonderful property and the region with more than just family and friends. So, operating tutored vacation retreats time seemed like a great idea. I  started with creative arts courses – and then a couple of years later I extended the kitchen substantially for our Gastro Academy cookery courses.

Songwriting breaks began in 2010, firstly with Dean Friedman as tutor for almost a decade and more recently, with Mike Batt.

These have always been the most wonderfully rewarding retreats, not just for the participants, who always adore them, but for me too. The sound of music constantly being played in all corners of the property and grounds – like a beautiful auditory backdrop – is the most enriching experience for me and all the other members of staff. We just love being on the perimeter of all that joy and enthusiasm.
