Explore Marrakech today at your leisure or relax at your Riad

Leave Marrakech for Ait Benhaddou

Today, your private air-conditioned minivan, with an English-speaking driver, will pick you up for a scenic journey from Marrakech to Aït Benhaddou.

On the way, experience the changing landscapes as you approach one of Morocco’s most iconic sites, the UNESCO-listed Aït Benhaddou Kasbah. Dating back to the 11th century, this ancient ksour was once a crucial stop along the trans-Saharan trade route linking Marrakech with the southern desert.

After settling in, wander through the kasbah’s quiet, winding alleys and discover its rich history. As the day-tour crowds leave, you’ll have the ancient town mostly to yourself. Take time to explore at your own pace, and for breath-taking panoramic views, hike up to the old granary. From here, enjoy sweeping vistas of the kasbah, the surrounding valley, and the ancient camel caravan routes.

For Game of Thrones fans, a short trek to the river offers a glimpse of the gates featured in the series. You may also recognize Aït Benhaddou from legendary films such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Jesus of Nazareth.

Spend the rest of the day at leisure, soaking in the magic of this timeless desert fortress.

Into the Desert

Your journey today continues to Tinerhir. This desert town offers awesome views of neighbouring towns hugging the length of the extensive river oasis (30 miles or 48 km of palm trees). Stop at Todra Gorge. Almost 1,000 feet (305 m) high and carved by the Todra River through red limestone, here you can enjoy a Lunch.

Nearing Erfoud, you will start to see the early signs of the Sahara sand dunes. Never stationary, the dunes travel as the winds shift. If you’re lucky, you may come across a nomadic Berber family and have the chance to drink tea together. Visit Erfoud and discover how the fossil-rich rock of its mines is transformed into decorative and practical objects. Continue on to the extensive sea of sand dunes of Erg Chebbi. Covering 13.5 square miles (35 square km), some dunes rise to over 656.2 feet (200 m), their colour changing with the moving sun.

Outside of Merzouga, change the pace and prepare for a camel ride through the dunes, arriving at camp just before sunset. Climb up the nearest sand dune to watch the colourful display as the sun sets behind the colossal dunes. Return to camp for dinner in the open air and an evening by the campfire enjoying traditional Berber music from the locals under a blanket of stars. Spend the night in a Bedouin-style tent.

Day in the the Erg Chebbi Desert

Start your adventure with a thrilling 4×4 excursion to the Flamingos’ Lake, then head towards Khamlia, a small desert village near the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi. Located about 7 km from Merzouga, Khamlia is home to the renowned Gnaoua music group, where you’ll enjoy their unique rhythms and cultural heritage.

Continue the journey with visits to the historic Khol mines, fossil sites, and abandoned desert villages. Along the way, pause for tea with a local nomadic family, immersing yourself in their traditions.

Cap off your day with an extra night at a desert camp, including a delicious dinner under the stars.

Merzouga to Fes

Leave the sweeping dunes of Merzouga behind as you embark on a scenic drive to Fes. The journey takes you through the lush Ziz Valley, with its palm groves and ancient kasbahs, and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, where you might spot wild Barbary macaques. Pause in Midelt for a relaxing lunch, enjoying local flavours in this charming town.

Continue through picturesque villages and rolling hills as you approach Fes, where the city’s vibrant energy and rich history await, marking the end of a captivating day of travel across Morocco’s diverse landscapes.
