Hamid, a local to Merzouga, led the tour, and I cannot rate him highly enough. He drove long distances to get from Marrakech to the Sahara, stopping for the most amazing photo opportunities, pointing out little businesses on the way that provided rose water, argan oil and fossil artefacts, and was always ready to answer our questions. Peak Season, March-May & September-November

This is the most popular time for tourism in Morocco, when the weather is more mild. Morocco can be very busy at this time, so be sure to book ahead and be prepared for crowds.

Summer Season, June-August

Morocco is usually less popular with tourists at this time as temperatures can exceed 40°C, especially in the more built-up cities like Marrakech, but coastal cities are usually cooler.

Shoulder Season, December-February

We would argue this is the best time for activity holidays in Morocco, with the temperatures a lot cooler, the crowds have died down and you can really get to know the place.

What the guidebooks won't tell you, Morocco

Learn basic Darija phrases – While French is common, knowing a few words of Moroccan Arabic like “shukran” (thank you) or “la shukran” (no thank you) goes a long way. Locals appreciate the effort and it can lead to more authentic experiences.
Embrace the hammam culture – These traditional bathhouses offer more than just cleansing. It’s a social ritual and wellness experience rolled into one. Just remember to bring your own toiletries and be prepared for a vigorous scrub!
Try the street food, but follow the crowds – Moroccan street food is delicious, but to avoid upset stomachs, eat where it’s busy. Long lines of locals are a good sign. Don’t miss the snail soup – it’s tastier than it sounds!
