Unique Arctic Holidays: Discover Iceland, Norway and Finland

Arctic holidays are one of the most unique and exciting holidays you can go on. We’ve been on the beach holidays and the stay-cations, but have you ever floated across blankets of snow as the Northern Lights danced above your head? Have you ever seen the earth spit a huge shower of water through its volcanic surface? Maybe you’ve bathed in the warm volcanic waters of the blue lagoon while surrounded by ice and snow? If you’ve already done these things then perhaps you already understand how incredible an Arctic holidays can be, but if not, then you’re probably ready for a new kind of adventure.

At Not in the Guidebooks we specialise in experiential holidays, and our Arctic holidays are certainly that. We work with local hosts in our Arctic destinations to offer authentic experiences that not only provide you with incredible adventures but also offer a more sustainable approach to travel. Tourism leakage means that on the average holiday about 78% of the money you spend goes into the pockets of giant multinational corporations, but with us you’re using local hosts, local accommodations and local services wherever possible, meaning we provide more responsible travel alternatives. If you want to hear more about one of our Arctic holidays, read Sophie Lam’s article in the I paper!

A geyser exploding out of the ground on an arctic holiday in Iceland

Iceland

Iceland is one of those destinations that will have you wondering if you’re still on earth or if you’ve been transported to a some far off magical land. But no, you’re still on earth, you’re just in a country that contains ⅓ of earth’s lava flow. What this means is totally unique geographical features, like lava fields, black sand beaches and the world famous geysirs. We have a couple of really exciting itineraries in Iceland that ensures that the time you spend there you’ll really get under the skin of the destination and experience a real Arctic holiday.

Fire & Ice Experience – Our Fire and Ice experience is the perfect spot for anyone looking to discover the unique geography of Iceland, with adventures to thundering waterfalls, scorching geysers and a trek through a lava tunnel. You will be staying in unique, luxury accommodations that will keep you comfortable on your adventure.

Golden Circle, Geothermal Lagoon and the Northern Lights – The golden circle is a world famous hiking route that will take you through some of the most exciting parts of southern Iceland. On this adventure you will have time to lounge in the geothermal lagoons and see the beautiful Northern Lights float overhead. While you’re there, you’ll have the chance to unwind in the chic and comfortable hotel (which also happens to have it’s own spa).

Long lake winding through a fjord on an arctic holiday in Norway

Norway

Norway is our northernmost Arctic holiday destination, which gives it a unique geography and opportunity for phenomena like the Northern Lights and the incredible Midnight Sun. Norway’s unique coastal geography also makes this destination a true bucket-list spot. Glide through the Norwegian Fjords and watch the orcas swim beside you on a truly out of this world adventure. If you are looking for an Arctic adventure and really mean it with the word Arctic, then Norway really is as good as it gets.

Norway Summer Odyssey – Typically when you think of an Arctic getaway you probably also assume winter, though Norway is of course beautiful and exciting all year round. On a Norway summer odyssey you can enjoy the scenic roads that weave through the countryside and witness the colossal waterfalls that fall dramatically off cliffs. If enjoying a summer hiking through glaciers, enjoying some cutting-edge cuisine and taking pictures of incredible natural landscapes sounds like your kind of thing, then the Norway summer odyssey is for you.

Fjords and the Midnight Sun in Norway – This adventure-packed getaway is the perfect arctic holiday for a more thrill-seeking adventurer. From kayaking amongst coastal mountains in the stunning Lofoten Islands to a luxury cruise through the famous Norwegian fjords (where dolphins often accompany the boat). Of course, with any holiday food is always a major part, and on a holiday to Norway you’ll have the chance to eat like a viking.

Northern lights over trees in Finland

Finland

Perhaps the most iconic Arctic holiday destination must be Finland. One way to get a more unique arctic experience out of Finland is to get off the beaten-track and find those more remote destinations.

Northern lights adventure in Saariselka – Saariselka is a real hidden gem in Lapland, surrounded by ancient forest and the incredible lake Inari, you’ll be surrounded by both comfort and adventure. Our unique accommodations are designed to provide you with the most opportunity to see the incredible Northern Lights through glass roofs. You will of course have the chance to go on a husky-drawn sled ride as well.

Arctic Snow Hotel Experience – An arctic snow hotel is one of those experiences that you can hardly believe is true. A snow hotel is essentially a room carved out of snow, an kind of igloo. Each year the room is carved out into a unique shape and you that is where you will be staying. As well as all the usual exciting activities like chasing the northern lights, husky sleigh rides and meeting reindeer.
