Whether you’re on the fence or doing research for a future visit, we’ve got everything you’ll want to know on what to do in Kenya. Kenya is one of the most iconic destinations you can visit in Africa, with towering mountain ranges, vast rainforest and the wide savanna, there isn’t much you can’t find in this beautiful country. We have a range of carefully curated itineraries including locally run accommodation and activities. But, we also want to give you an idea of the kind of activities you could get up to in Kenya.
Safari & Water Safari
Perhaps the most obvious thing to do in Kenya is the Safari. Kenya is home to some of the most iconic wildlife in the world, including giraffes, lions, hippopotamus and crocodiles. We love to include in our itineraries the chance to do a water safari. This is where a local guide will take you on a small boat to float over Lake Naivasha where you can get up close and personal with some of the water-based animals. Also, being a popular drinking hole you can see all kinds of animals stopping off for a sip to drink around this beautiful lake.
Another great way to experience wildlife is with a game drive through Masia Mara. There aren’t many places on earth that you might stand a chance of seeing a lion, leopard, buffalo, rhinoceros and elephant in one day, but in the Kenyan savanna which teems with wildlife, if you’re lucky you could tick this bucket list experience off in one day.
Cycling Over Savanna
Here at Not in the Guidebooks we love to get a bit active on our holidays, which is why we always try to include something that gets our heart rate up, and cycling over a savanna will certainly do that. Working with a local guide, you can hop on a bike and cycle over the Mara savanna. This is a great opportunity to see animals like zebras, wildebeest, giraffes and rhino in the wild. Not only that, on our 10 day active adventure in Kenya you’ll be able to hop off your bike at the end of the day and enjoy a night beside a campfire in a beautiful camp site.
Kakamega Rainforest Hike
As well as the savanna, mountain ranges and lakes, there is also the Kakamega Rainforest. And, for anyone wondering what to do in Kenya, the Kakamega rainforest is a great place to start. On our itinerary we like to have at least a guided hike through this lush paradise. We opt to stay overnight against the backdrop of the rainforest in a cute wooden hut, so you can enjoy the otherworldly sounds of the forest.
Another great way to see the rainforest is through a privately guided raft down one of the rivers that flow through the Kakamega rainforest. This is a great way to see the giant palms and wild orchids, as well as raging jungle rapids. You will also see monkeys swinging through the trees, jumping over the rafts and the amazing red of the Nandie Flame tree set against the lush green jungle. So, if any of that sounds like something you’d be interested in then check out our itinerary.
Explore the Great Rift Valley
The Great Rift Valley is a system of ridges that runs straight through Kenya. The whole rift is broken up by mountains, volcanoes and other geological sites. It truly is something to behold and you don’t want to miss it on your trip to Kenya. With Not in the Guidebooks you’ll have the opportunity to see this marvel on a 4-by-4 ride with an expert local guide.
Explore the Volcanoes
Kenya is a hotbed for geological activity, and so it is a great place to explore volcanic craters. On our trip your guide will take you for a walk up one of the many volcanic craters, where you can drink in the enormous, panoramic views of the Rift Valley as the sun rises over the plains and lakes. Our guide will be able to provide you with all kinds of interesting information, both historical and geographical about this beautiful part of the world.
